Preparing a Toddler for Photos with a New Baby

By Marianna · Golden Art Photography · Updated 2026-10-19

Keep preparation simple and familiar: explain that your family will have photographs together, choose comfortable clothes and bring the everyday things your child normally needs. A toddler does not need to rehearse a perfect smile or promise to hold a pose.

Choose the right newborn collection

Sibling portraits are included in The Family Story and Deluxe Newborn Experience. Simply Baby is baby-only. Confirm the collection before telling your older child that they will be part of the pictures.

Describe the visit in ordinary words

Talk about meeting Marianna and having photographs with the baby. Avoid making the child's participation a test of being a good older sibling. A new baby is already a big change, and a calm explanation can leave room for curiosity.

Plan clothes and supplies for comfort

  • Try the outfit ahead of time and check that your child can sit and move.
  • Bring the everyday supplies that support their usual routine.
  • Tell Marianna about sensitivities or concerns before the appointment.
  • Keep expectations flexible if the newborn needs feeding or soothing.

Share which sibling photograph matters most to you, while leaving the actual setup to the photographer's guidance. Natural closeness can be meaningful even when it does not match a photograph you saved for inspiration.
